Electing to have cosmetic surgery is a major step that requires a great deal of thought and research on your part before moving forward with the procedure. One of the most important decisions in the entire process, but one which, surprisingly enough, is overlooked by many prospective patients, is choosing which doctor to entrust your body to. While there are of course many variables involved in doctor selection, including experience, bedside manner, location, and fees, there is also one overriding constant: you should always choose a board certified plastic surgeon. What does it mean to say that someone is a board certified plastic surgeon? It means that the doctor in question currently meets and maintains a high level of professional, educational, and ethical standards as set forth by an independent sanctioning body. There are several different organizations that award certifications in cosmetic surgery, but not all of them measure the same criteria. So it's important for you to find out exactly what it takes for the organization to certify doctors. The most widely recognized organization is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, also known as the ASPS. The ASPS requires their members to undergo extensive clinical training, to pass a rigid examination, and to become re-certified on a regular basis. Although there are no guarantees as far as cosmetic surgery goes, choosing a board certified plastic surgeon could increase your chances of having a safe and successful experience. In addition to meeting stringent educational and training requirements, most board certified plastic surgeons have chosen to specialize in certain areas, such as facial procedures, breast augmentation, or reconstructive surgery. When a doctor specializes, he or she gains invaluable knowledge and insight, and will be able to address any concerns you may have prior to the operation. The bottom line is that there are risks associated with all surgical procedures, including those of the cosmetic variety. You will no doubt have a lot of questions and feel a bit nervous before going in to get the work done. Knowing that you will be in the hands of a board certified plastic surgeon can help reduce your anxiety and give you some much-needed peace of mind. So do yourself a favor and choose only board certified plastic surgeons to help create your new look!
